Mental Health & Wellbeing

Be Brave - Be Kind - Be Your Best

At Skirlaugh CE Primary School, we are committed to creating a caring, welcoming and inclusive community where the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils, families and staff is valued and nurtured.

Our Christian vision, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” (Colossians 3:23), reminds us that every member of our school family is valued, unique and deserving of care and support. We believe that positive mental health is everyone’s responsibility, and that through kindness, compassion and strong relationships, we can help one another to flourish.

We recognise that everyone experiences challenges at different times in their lives, and we are committed to providing a safe space where children and adults feel able to talk, seek support and know that they are not alone. Through our nurturing approach, everyday relationships and targeted support, we help children develop confidence, resilience and the emotional skills they need to thrive.

Our mental health and wellbeing team support members of our school community and, where appropriate, work alongside families and external professionals to ensure that children and adults receive the right support at the right time.

Our Mentally Healthy School

We promote a mentally healthy environment through all aspects of school life. We recognise that wellbeing is built through positive relationships, a strong sense of belonging and opportunities for every child to feel valued, respected and confident.

We support the wellbeing of our pupils by:

  • Promoting our Christian values and creating a strong sense of belonging where every child feels known, valued and cared for.
  • Listening to children’s voices and providing opportunities for them to contribute, make choices and take part in decisions that affect them.
  • Celebrating all achievements, both academic and personal, to build confidence, self-esteem and a positive sense of identity.
  • Providing opportunities for children to develop responsibility, independence and a sense of worth through caring for themselves and others.
  • Creating opportunities for reflection, mindfulness and spiritual wellbeing.
  • Helping children to understand their emotions, recognise their feelings and feel confident to share worries or concerns.
  • Supporting children to develop resilience, manage challenges and learn from setbacks.
  • Providing access to appropriate support that meets individual needs, including support from our trained wellbeing team.
  • Offering targeted interventions and support programmes for children who may benefit from additional help.
  • Supporting emotional regulation through our PSHE curriculum and approaches that help children develop self-awareness and coping strategies.

Current Support Packages

Currently, we offer support for mental wellbeing at three different levels:

Universal Support - To meet the needs of all our pupils through our overall ethos and our wider curriculum. For instance, developing resilience for all.

Additional/Targetted support - For those who may have short-term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.

External/Specialist support - For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as wellbeing groups or personal mentors.

Further information of the types of support available can be found in our provision map below.
