Lunchtimes at Skirlaugh
Each day the majority of children stay at school for a delicious school dinner or packed lunch using the school hall and outside picnic areas. Our children enjoy eating at school and love the creative play sessions lunchtimes offer.
School Meals
At Skirlaugh Primary, we employ our own Cook and Kitchen Assistants and cook all our food on site to ensure the quality, nutrition and value for money of all our school dinners.
Children have a choice of:
- main course: a hot school meal; a filled, hot jacket potato or sandwich.
- desert: a school pudding, yoghurt, fresh fruit salad or choice of fruit.
- drink: either milk, juice or water.
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are provided with their school lunch free of charge.
For children in Nursery and Years 3, 4, 5 or 6 the cost of a school meal is £2.75.
Healthy Packed Lunches
We believe it is important that the young children in our care eat healthily. In our science curriculum, pupils are made aware of the benefits of healthy eating and the risks of a poor diet. Our hot school meals are prepared following national guidance on nutrition and provide a balanced diet. When children bring in their own packed lunch from home, we also ask that it be healthy, nutritious and well-balanced.
We are a nut free school and kindly request that parents do not pack items containing nuts.
We recommend that a balanced packed lunch should contain
- starchy food (e.g. bread, bagal, wrap or pasta);
- protein foods (e.g. meat, fish, eggs, beans);
- a dairy item (e.g. cheese or yoghurt);
- a portion of fruit or vegetables;
- a drink such as water or fruit juice.
The lunch box may also contain one of the following for that extra energy boost:
- Packet of crisps
- Sweet option – small piece of cake, biscuit or cookie.
There should be no sweets or chocolate or fizzy drinks in school and, as I’m sure you’ll understand, should they come into school, they will be confiscated and returned to parents at the end of the day.
Food Allergies and Intolerances
Has your child got any food allergies or intolerance? If so, please view our daily menu, so you can make an informed choice for your child. Please ensure you inform the school of any Allergen or Food Intolerance, so we can take the appropriate action.
There are 14 major allergens which need to be declared when used as an ingredient. Please contact the school office to discuss the menu in more detail and any allergies or intolerances that your child may have. Every effort will be made to provide alernative choices and processes which avoid the risk of cross-contamination.
