Meet Olive!

Olive is one of the newest additions to the Skirlaugh family and has taken on the role of our Therapy Dog. Olive comes into school 3 days per week and works with individuals, small groups and whole classes to support emotional wellbeing. Olive is based predominantly in 'The Bridge' - our nurture provision. However, each week a different class takes responsibility for caring for Olive, which includes monitoring her food and water, and taking her for walks. The children are loving the additional responsibility and providing exceptional care for her already. 

Olive loves her meet and greets on the gate in a morning - you are most welcome to come and give her some fuss!

During the days she is in school, Olive is based in The Bridge, but she lives with Miss Sugden for the rest of the week. Olive has been fully trained through the Dog Mentor Programme and is now working towards her gold level.

Profile

At Skirlaugh Primary, we are incredibly lucky because we have the most amazing dog called Olive. Olive is a spaniel puppy who comes into school three days a week. Olive is here to help us feel safe in school, cheer us up when we're down and put a smile on our faces. 

Did you know...?

  • In school, Olive has monitors who help her: they take her for walks, teach her new tricks and monitor her food and water; 
  • Olive has lots of human friends in school, but she also has furry friends who she sees on a weekend; 
  • Olive knows lots of tricks already: she can sit, stay, wait and fetch; 
  • Olive loves going out for walks, especially on our school field; 
  • Olive's adult handlers in school are Mrs Pitois and Miss Sugden;
  • In school, Olive stays in The Bridge, but she goes home with Miss Sugden each night; 
  • When Olive visits our classroom we all need to be Olive ready: the classroom must be tidy, and the children must be quiet, calm and still.
